Paid links and PR drops were a hot topic at Pubcon Las Vegas last week. Matt Cutts video interview, and he explained it quite rationally.

I actually don't think paid links are fair. I'm a victim in a very dangerous and violent situation, and the internet has been my only resource available--to keep me alive, to help me rationalize, to give me support from real people. Otherwise, I would be dead meat. However, I'm now in a position to take my defense to law enforcement and the District Attorney and Criminal Court.***Susanne
